The Hyacinth 'Peter Stuyvesant', 'Hyacinthus orientalis', a fall planted bulb, is an award-winning variety with extremely large, luscious porcelain-blue flowers with purple stripes. An outstanding variety for the garden, and it is one of the best for indoors, forcing it to bloom at Easter. They are highly fragrant. Grow them outdoors or indoors for their graceful shape, long-lasting blooms and sweet scent. Hyacinths are great for indoor forcing, containers, and borders. They flower in mid spring for a 3 - 4 week period.

Hyacinths require a well-drained soil. If they must be planted in heavy soil, mix some sand into the soil. When planted in somewhat shady spots, the flowers will last longer than they would in the hot sun. For the best effects, plant the bulbs in clusters of 5 to 15 bulbs of one variety, or scatter clusters throughout the garden or flower border. Wear gloves to prevent skin irritation. These plants are deer, squirrel and rabbit resistant.

The grocery store gave me one of what I think is one of these flowers, because they said it would die tomorrow, couldnt be planted because squirrels would eat it. Your review says it can resist squirrels and can be forced to grow inside, which she assured me would not work. I am either going to try and plant it outside or learn about saving the bulb and saving it to force next year. I LOVE THIS FLOWER..it is my FAVORITE. The Purple Hyacinth has the best smell and appearance of all the spring flowers in my opnion. It just screams SPRING to me..and makes my whole WEEK. I am thrilled to have had it given to me....and I will do all I can to save it. Thanks for the info posted on how to care for it.
