The Paper Birch tree, Betula papyrifera, is also known as a Paper Birch, White Birch, Canoe Birch. Paper Birch trees are the most widely distributed (east to west) of all North American birches. The graceful form and attractive white bark of paper birch make it a prized species for ornamental planting and landscaping around homes and public buildings.

On young trees, trunk bark is reddish-brown but turns to its characteristic white colour as the tree matures. The trunk generally divides into several arching branches. This deciduous tree tolerates alkaline soils well. Paper birch are fast growing trees.

I was just wondering how you think a paper birch tree would survive in north Florida? Our year round temperatures vary between 90 degrees and 25 degrees. The mean temperature is probably about 65 and there is a fair amount of rain during the summer.

Answer from Nature Hills: Paper Birch trees would not prosper in your location. Zone 6 locations would be as far south as one could take the Paper Birch.

do birch trees need lots of water or lots of sun most of the time?

Answer from Nature Hills: Paper Birch prefer full sun but they will also tolerate some partial shade. The Paper Birch is fast growing and therefore will require a good supply of moisture.
