Product Description:

The Ohio Buckeye tree, Aesculus glabra, derives the name from its large brown seeds, which resemble the eyes of the white-tailed deer. In the spring it produces greenish yellow flowers with protruding stamens, followed by prickly fruits. It is a handsome tree with attractive foliage.

The Ohio Buckeye prefers shady conditions in its youth, but grows in full sun to full shade from youth through maturity. The Ohio buckeye is also known as American buckeye, fetid buckeye, and stinking buck-eye. It derives its unflattering common names from the disagreeable odor that emanates when the leaves are crushed. The leaves are dark green above and paler below. This deciduous tree is a good shade tree.

Shade, Shade & More Shade!
Reviewer: dragonlady, 7/28/2007 11:26:30 AM
A close friend of ours built a new house on a corner lot with a huge stately buckeye tree in front of the house near the street. I gives his yard deep shade and the kids love to gather the seeds and they have become a trading game with other kids at school as this tree is not that common in Iowa. I intend to replace some of my maples with this tree species after witnessing its performance in my friends yard. Picking up buckeyes cant be any worse than picking up walnuts the squirrels dont get.

Excellent Tree!

When I was a little kid, the only trees I new of were Chinese Elms, Ash trees, and Mulberry trees. When we moved to a new house, there was a tree planted in the corner of our yard. Quite a hearty tree, too. It had the wierd fruits on it, and it caught my attention. There wasn't a week that went by that I looked at this tree and wondered what it was. In the fall, the leaves looked as if they were about to burst into flames. It was the most colorful tree we had. The nuts it produced also caught my attention. They were definatly fun to give to the squirrels, and it was also a very fun tree to climb on. I would recommend this tree to anyone that wants to add some color to their yard, and most definatly their grove. They have a very healthy plummage, and are quite hearty. They give off plenty of shade, but don't put it too close to your house if you like to pick up nuts. Definately a squirrel attractor.

Be Careful

Although a very pretty tree, the leaves and nuts of the buckeye are poisonous. Take into consideration before planting.
