The Oakleaf Hydrangea, Hydrangea quercifolia, is an upright, deciduous shrub with a broad, rounded habit that typically grows 4-6' tall. It features elongated white flowers which slowly turn pinkish purple with age. The most vigorous blooming of all the hydrangea's. The blooms often weigh down the branches. Long late spring to summer bloom period. Distinctive, deeply lobed, somewhat coarse, oak-like, deep green leaves (to 8" long) turn attractive shades of bronze, crimson or purple in autumn.

Mature stems exfoliate to reveal a rich brown inner bark which is attractive in winter. Mass or group in a mixed shrub border or naturalize in a native plant or open woodland garden. It also may be used for backgrounds, accents or specimens, foundation plantings or hedges. Best grown in fertile, medium wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. Mulch root zone in summer and provide somewhat constant moisture. Little pruning is needed, but should be done any time after flowering.

My friends mother bought a house with this bush already planted. I had never seen it before and neither had they. So I was seaching to fiind out what it was. I thought it looked like it was from the hydrangea family, but wasnt sure until now. It is a beautiful looking bush. The flowering is awesome. Thank you for the info on it. I can now tell them what it is and the care of it. Greatful, Littledeer

My husband and I moved into a home which is about 6 years old. This plant was in the garden. I thought for sure it was an oak tree, so I kept cutting it back. Upon going to a local nursery I discovered it was the Woody Oak Leaf Hydrangea. I left it alone and it bloomed beautifully this summmer. Many small shoots have come up as a result of my cutting it back for 2 years in a row. This summer it had a beautiful bloom and it changed colors with time. No care at all is needed and it is quite wet where it is located. I will try transplanting some of the small shoots.

My oak leave hydrangea is blooming now. It has huge flowers and smells wonderful! Grows well in part shade with rich organic soil. Needs water during dry spells.
