The Newport Plum, Prunus cerasifera 'Newport, is a superior small ornamental tree that has beautiful reddish-purple foliage with bright red tips all summer long. One of the first trees to bloom in spring, it has fragrant pink flowers that are followed by purple fruit. Newport was introduced in 1923 by the University of Minnesota and is probably the most hardy of the purple-leaf cherry plum trees. This is a rounded, deciduous tree that is highly decorative with its beautiful foliage. Excellent in Japanese gardens, or just about anywhere you would like an extravagant, showy specimen tree. It prefers sandy or clay soils, and its water needs range from normal to moist. Newport is low maintenance and tolerates deer and rabbits.

Excellent Tree

I purchased this tree just a few months ago and am very pleased. New growth began a couple of days after planting and delicate flowers appeared in just a couple weeks. Even without the flowers, the coloring of the leaves makes this tree a delight to the eyes. Only problem so far is that some deer do like it. Would highly recommend this beautiful tree.
