The Loves-Lies-Bleeding, 'Amaranthus caudatis', has crimson tassels that cascade to the ground from an exotic, showy, bushy plant. Dramatic, tropical, romantic, old-fashioned; they all describe Love-Lies-Bleeding. This plant was popular in colonial American and Victorian English gardens. The tassels can reach 18 inches and last for many weeks. Loves-Lies-Bleeding are also called tassel flower, prince's feather and red cockscomb. The red tassel is a colony of tiny, tightly packed flowers. The plant is bushy with sturdy, branching stems and dark green leaves. They bloom from summer to early fall.
Love-Lies-Bleeding prefers full sun and rich, well drained soil. Water and fertilize regularly for longest tassels. Plant in the spring after last average frost date. They are excellent for fresh or dried flower arrrangements.
