The Hyacinth 'Blue Ice' (Koh-i-Nor), 'Hyacinthus orientalis', is a fall planted bulb that produces powder blue flowers with a violet blue stripe. The colors are bright and lasting; size and fragrance are outstanding. Hyacinths can be used in many ways; in formal beds or groups or very effectively in informal ways-scattered in the border between ground covers and perennials or in small clumps in front of evergreens. 'Blue Ice' (Koh-i-Nor) is an excellent flower for window boxes. The beauty of hyacinths-dewy spring color, and head turning fragrance, are the most dominant qualities of hyacinths, covering the spectrum from rich blues to vibrant magentas and pinks to cool yellow and whites. Save a few to force indoors for an early burst of spring. They flower in mid spring for a 3 - 4 week period.
Hyacinths require a well-drained soil. If they must be planted in heavy soil, mix some sand into the soil. When planted in somewhat shady spots, the flowers will last longer than they would in the hot sun. For the best effects, plant the bulbs in clusters of 5 to 15 bulbs of one variety, or scatter clusters throughout the garden or flower border. Wear gloves to prevent skin irritation. These plants are deer, squirrel and rabbit resistant.
