Helmond Pillar Barberry, Berberis thunbergii 'Helmond Pillar', is a great selection for structure and color in the garden. 'Helmond Pillar' has an upright, columnar form and features red-purple foliage. This columnar size provides excellent vertical accents. Tiny yellow flowers in spring are followed by shiny red berries in autumn. Easily grown in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil in full sun. Helmond Pillar Barberry tolerates light shade, but needs full sun to develop best foliage color. It is a very adaptable shrub that is tolerant of many pollutants in urban areas. Also tolerates drought, but will not perform well in poorly drained, wet soils. This barberry grows somewhat slowly to 4-5' tall and only 1-2' wide, and is effective as a small screen or hedge. It is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub which features reddish-purple, variably sized leaves on reddish brown stems, which have sharp thorns. There are no serious disease or insect problems with this barberry.
