The Arborvitae Green Giant, 'Thuja plicata 'Green Giant', is a giant arborvitae that has bright green, fern-like foliage. This plant is very adaptable to wet or dry soils. The Green Giant is fast growing for an arborvitae and it is also very dense and they are used extensively for borders, screens, windbreaks or as an accent tree. When used as a hedge, the Green Giant can be trimmed and kept to a dense 6 foot hedge.

bought in spring of 05 at 12" this littel guy is nearly 4feet now and has a beautiful green/blue coloring especially in mixed light/shaded area impressive even in a less than ideal location. I will likely buy several more as they have a stately and smooth look to them. very pleasantly surprised!

I purchased 24 Green Giants from another company, for the outside row of a 3 row windbreak. (Z5a) I lost more than half to a late Spring freeze. The rising sap froze, split the trunks from the ground up, 4-5 inches. All the trees that split, died. Very disappointed. Called the company, they said they lost several of their own stock also. Id say this cultivar isnt suited to any Zn north of 6. Go with Techny instead.

I'm in zone 5a and I planted 10 Green Giants 7 years ago, and all have done very well. They grow very fast when given proper watering. No problem with winter weather. In fact, does a great job of shedding large, heavy wet snow, unlike emerald arbor vitae. Does grow more pyramidal than some arbor vitae cultivars, but is a lacy, less formal, and very attractive tree.

I purchased 10 of these from my local nursery at 7ft or so. I can't attest to how fast they grow, as its only been 8 months, but I can defintiely see new growth even in that short amount of time. Mine are in quite a bit of shade, but I coudln't find any other privacy shrub besides a hemlock that would tolerate it, so I took a chance. They seem to be doing quite well!! The most pleasant part of these trees, aside from the fast growth (which I am really interested in seeing this spring), is how pretty it is. Most arborvitae are so generic looking-these are much more attractive than other species. Its got one central leader, so they don't split in the snow. Its very pyrimidal and beautifully shaped. And it smells amazing-you have to be close to catch some of the fragrance, but is a nice citrusy smell. I absolutely love these shrubs.
