The Sequoia, Giant, Sequoiadendron giganteum, is one of the largest and longest-lived life forms and shared the earth with the dinosaurs!. It has bluish green needles that vary in length and reddish brown cones. The Sequoia has deeply grooved, reddish bark and soft, straight-grained, reddish heartwood that is resistance to decay. But the wood is brittle, so it does not make good lumber. Growing at a medium growth rate, it reaches 60 to 100 feet in height and becomes a shelter for wildlife. The Sequoia grows well in acidic, loamy, moist, sandy, well drained, clay soils. It requires full sun and is drought tolerant. Plant as a specimen tree or use as a windbreak.
