The Red Bud tree, Cercis Canadensis, is also known as the eastern red bud, and sometimes referred to as the Judas tree because it dates back to biblical times. It is a small deciduous tree that displays an abundance of purple blossoms in the spring. It has large heart shaped leaves during the summer, and long seedpods in the fall. Red Bud trees have a yellow fall color.

These trees are effective as a single specimen, in groupings, in a shrub border, and especially nice in woodland and naturalized type situations. It has low water requirements and displays a high tolerance to salt and alkali soils. Thousands of small rosy-pink flowers appear in the spring before leaves appear. It can be used in full sun to part shade. Does well in many soil types, except permanently wet soils. The seed pods attract wildlife.

This is a really show tree but in windy conditions it tends to break not bend . The multi steam is really the best way to go if you have any wind exposure .

In front of my apartment was a redbud tree, last spring it was so beautifully covered in purple buds. A recent ice storm demolished the beautiful tree, because it was leaning the ice made it so heavy it just fell over and now its cut up. I think I might ask the apartment complex to put up the same kind of tree, I miss it already.

  I Loved the Leaves, 4/26/2007 3:23:18 PM

I first noticed an Eastern Redbud tree that was planted in the medium outside a sidewalk. The heartshaped leaves were beautiful and I always admired it. I finally asked the owner what kind of tree it was and he said it was an Eastern Redbud tree. I planted one in my yard and it is one of my favorite trees. The shape of the trunk and branches are beautiful and the flowers that bloom in the Spring are almost effervescent when the sun shines through them. I have had many compliments on this tree and I cant recommend it more. Im thinking of getting one to put in my front yard.

We purchased an Eastern Red Bud because it was part of a free garden plan were wanting to use. It is probably the most beautiful tree Ive ever seen. Trunk is straight & the beautiful dark red heart shaped leaves have a deep green color on back. The spring blooms are breath taking!!! Even prettier than my japanese red maple!
