Clematis Mme. Julia Correvon, Clematis viticella 'Mme. Julia Correvon', produces stunning 4" true red flowers that display their beauty nearly all summer long! The flower tepals have deeply veined midribs and margins that are somewhat scalloped and recurving. As each flower matures, the tepals twist, which creates an interesting combination of aging twisted flowers and fully open new flowers. 'Mme. Julia Correvon' is a vigorous grower that looks lovely when allowed to grow through small trees or shrubs! 'Mme. Julia Correvon' needs a supporting structure to grow properly. Clematis is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow-rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established; they take a season or two. Prune lightly above the new leaf buds in early spring and remove any dead or weak stems.

I have lots of compliments on this Clematis but it was slow to get going. After 3-5 years of doing very little I let shrubs grow in front of it and I stopped pruning and for the last 3 years it is a riot of red blooms early summer. The first flush lasts a long time but it does not produce a second flush, after flowering the leaves tend to be a scruffy brown in places. Definately likes its roots in shade and its head in the sun. Good clematis if your patient.
