Clematis Empress, Clematis 'Empress™', is a charming clematis that will impress with a profusion of pink. Clematis 'Empress' produces large double flowers that have pink petals with darker pink center bars. The inner petals sprout spiky pink "hair" and the plant blooms from May through June and in August. 'Empress' is a compact, free-flowering plant that displays well in containers. Clematis 'Empress™' needs a supporting structure to grow properly. Clematis is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow-rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established; they take a season or two.
