Clematis Bourbon, Clematis 'Bourbon™', is an exciting new compact clematis from Raymond J. Evison. Evison specifically hybridized this prized variety for patio containers. The compact growth reaches only 3-4 feet tall, which makes it a perfect fit for large patio pots. 'Clematis Bourbon' is equally happy, though, when grown in the ground and allowed to scramble up a small trellis. The large 6 inch flowers are red with bright purple bars in the center of each petal. Flowers rebloom throughout the summer for an incredible display! Clematis 'Bourbon™' needs a supporting structure to grow properly but will also grow over large shrubs, over walls, cover stumps, and make perfect cover ups for unsightly service areas. Clematis is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow-rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established; they take a season or two to get going. Groom this plant after first flowering by cutting back the top one-third to one-half of some stems.
