Clematis Baltyk, Clematis 'Baltyk', is a large flowering Polish variety that is an early bloomer with light blue-violet flowers with dark crimson stamens. A light red bar gently graces the center of each tepal as the flowers mature. This soft reddish-pink central bar blends nicely with the lovely bluish color. Blooms in late spring and repeats at the end of summer. Clematis 'Baltyk' is named after the color of the Baltic Sea. Clematis 'Baltyk' needs a supporting structure to grow properly but will also grow over large shrubs, over walls, cover stumps, and make perfect cover ups for unsightly service areas. Clematis is easy to grow in a rich, porous, alkaline soil with plenty of room for the roots to spread. Best performance is when the tops are in full sunlight and the roots are shaded, so apply a generous mulch or a shallow-rooted ground cover near the base of the vine. Very reliable performers once established; they take a season or two to get going. Groom this plant after first flowering by cutting back the top one-third to one-half of some stems.
