The Purple Butterfly Bush, Buddleia davidii 'ile de France', is a butterfly magnet. This bush flowers summer and fall and is easy to grow. With a name like Butterfly Bush you might expect a plant to be attractive to butterflies. In fact, it's more than attractive; it's a magnet for all the butterflies that pass through your garden seeking nectar.

This deciduous bush blooms mid-summer to early fall. Butterflies and bees will flock to the honey-scented blossoms, whose dilute nectar is sweetest in midday sun. Plant it near a path or patio and the shrub will provide a delightful fragrance for you, too. It's generally pest-free.

This bush does everything claimed. Butterflys love it. Its very attractive. I need to know what to do to prepare it for winter. How much should I prune the canes?

Answer from Nature Hills: The butterfly bush is a woody perennial, you cut it back in late winter to about 6".

I have three in my front yard and have been able to experiment with photography because of the amount of butterflies. Its really lovely. I have a question...I didnt know to cut the bushes back in the winter...now its spring and I have green leaves on them already. Can I still cut them back...or just leave them alone? They are 2 years old and very big.

Answer from Nature Hills: Yes, cut them back now, late winter or early spring. Do not worry about them starting to break dormancy, they will be fine.

I recently planted the Claret Purple Butterfly Bush in my yard but was concerned if it is a deer favorite before purchasing anymore as I have a deer problem because my home is butted up against a densely wooded area.
