Product Description:

The Houttuynia ‘Chameleon Plant’, Houttuynia cordata, is one of the most popular ground covers around. Small white flowers appear from July to August, but sometimes hard to see because of its foliage. It is an extremely hardy ground cover and easy to grow but can become very invasive. Being similar in shape to English Ivy, it features boldly variegated leaves of red, pink, white, green, and yellow with a plant height of 15”.

Houttuynia requires light shade and needs a consistently moist soil in a well-drained area. They have a fresh, somewhat citrus-like scent when crushed. Use Houttuynia ‘Chameleons’ as a ground cover, in rock gardens, with water plants or in scented gardens.

The one I love...

My Chameleon grows beautifully in full sun in Southern Mass. I keep it watered, but not "wet" and it does just fine. I absolutely love the colors.

pretty, but smelly

I loved the colors, and it grew very well in my Indiana garden. The problem came as I was digging it up to prevent too much spreading...It STINKS!

Extremely invasive in Southeastern PA

This plant is extremely invasive. I have been trying to remove it from a bed for 6 years now with little success.

This is a beautiful plant but just too invasive for a garden. I moved it to a pot this spring and it is doing well, so hopefully that is the solution! As for the other reviewer's "stinks" comment: I think this must be like food: some people love it and others don't. I find it has a wonderful, fresh smell when pulled up :)

This plant is called Yuxingcao in China. Its flavor is unique and it's one of the favorite sallad (tender roots and leaves) in Sichuan, China. It is also called King of herbs --its extract is used to cure many kinds of infections in hospitals in China.

life long gardener

I love this plant. Two years after putting some in, it's spreading and blooming and is also somewhat taller. Some people might consider it invasive but since I don't love lawn, it's fine with me. I'm literally yanking it out by it's roots and replanting it. After a couple of days of transplant wilt, it's doing just fine even with my rough handling and minimal watering. This is my kind of plant. Pretty, hardy, and spreads.
