Hydrangea - Blue Bird, Hydrangea serrata 'Blue Bird', produces pale lilac-blue sterile flowers (large outside flowers) and deep blue fertile flowers (small inside flowers) in acidic soils. In soils where lime is added, the flowers will be pink. With this variety, the flowers fade to a pink as the flower ages. Blue Bird is an old Japanese cultivar with a strong growth habit. This rounded decidious shrub has coarsely toothed, dark green, eight inch long leaves and grows 4 to 6 feet in height. For fresh cut flowers, harvest when the flowers are completely opened. It prefers rich, loamy soil that is moist, but well-drained and does well in full sun or part shade. Its rich foliage and stunning flowers make it a wonderful landscape focal point. Hydrangeas are beautiful, easy to grow, and attractive in your landscape with their large clusters of beautiful repeating flowers. They are great in mass plantings or as hedges.
