Product Description:

The Sweet Potato Vine Blackie, 'Ipomoea batatas', a Proven Winners selection, has a trailing habit and dark red/purple leaves that are shaped like a bird's footprint. This ornamental plant provides color and interest like no other plant. They are grown for their distinctive foliage and vigorous growth habit. Blackie looks nice planted with lighter foliaged plants. Ornamental Sweet Potato Vines can be used as an annual groundcover or in hanging baskets and pots. They grow best when provided with a high light location and relatively warm temperatures.

For zones 10-11, this plant can also be a perennial.

After planting this for its foliage and ground cover i was surprised to find its "potato" everywhere it bloomed. The white sweet potato from it is not as moist as the orange but is certainly tasty, steamed soft. it really doesnt need the usual brown sugar mix just eat em and enjoy!

I believe that this plant is the same as extensively grown in Liberia W. Africa and is called as Potato Green. It is a delicacy and used as food and is cooked with fish and meat. Only green color variety is available. Can any one inform me that the plants sold in U.S espcially of red color are edible and do these are used in culinary dishes beside being grown as ornamental plants.
