Holly - Blue Baron, Ilex x meserveae 'Blue Baron' (PP16,151), is shorter in stature than 'Blue Prince', but just as hardy and a perfect companion to female hollies. Small white flowers appear in spring. Blue Baron is a superb dwarf variety with a compact habit and dark blue-green leaves that are heavily overcast with burgundy in winter. 'Blue Baron' can be used as a pollinator for 'Blue Princess'. It displays lovely burgundy tinged foliage in winter. It prefers moist, well-drained, rich, slightly acidic soils, but tolerates soils of average to poor fertility and is pH adaptable to neutral or slightly alkaline soils. (Many Hollies require acidic soils.) Hollies cheer every winter landscape with their dark green leaves and bright red berries. They are truly plants with year-round interest: blooms in the spring, berries in fall, and structure in winter. These plants display vibrantly colored textures in a variety of shapes and can be used as foundation plantings or massed in the shrub border.
