Grass - Shenandoah Switch
The Grass 'Shenandoah Switch Grass', Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah', has a burgundy-red color to the foliage.
This one starts out red in June, by mid-summer it looks like Bloodgrass, and in fall, it is a rich burgundy.
The foliage starts out as deep green but takes on the red color thru the summer. The 4' height makes this a good choice for a specimen plant.
It is one of the shortest Switch Grass varieties available. Given full sun and average soil, it is a moderate to fast grower.
This plant will grow in dry to moist soils or well-drained, loamy, sandy or clay soils with a pH of a neutral to slightly alkaline.
In early spring, before new growth begins, cut the old grass to the ground. If you want to divide the clump, do so in the spring.
Its attributes include naturalizing, attracting birds and suitable for cut and dried flowers.
A lot to love with this plant! It attracts birds, has showy fall foliage, showy flowers, and showy foliage throughout the growing season!
