The Paperbark Maple, Acer griseum, is perhaps the most beautiful maple because of its crimson red fall foliage, and for its cinnamon colored bark, which peels off in thin, curly strips!
Paperbark is a slow growing tree, but it is well worth the wait. This deciduous tree requires sun to partial shade; prefers moist, well drained soil but grows in a variety of soil types. It thrives in well-drained soils that are either acid or alkaline; not drought tolerant. Its form is upright and oval to round.
Most specimens are seen with multiple trunks which branch close to the ground, but proper training when young can create a single trunk.
This tree is recommended for buffer strips around parking lots or for median strip plantings in the highway, near a deck or patio, or as a specimen. Paperbark Maple is relatively free of diseases and insect pests.
The rounded shape of this maple tree makes it particularly stunning as an accent plant, and landscapers love using this tree as an ornamental!
