Oriental Poppy Miss Piggy, Papaver orientalis 'Miss Piggy' (PP#17,610), will really grab your attention in the garden with its huge 10" flowers! The mammoth double blooms of Papaver 'Miss Piggy' are white with a touch of soft pink infused through the ruffled petals. The center seed pod and surrounding dark purple stamens really set off the light color of the petals. After they are done blooming, poppies will go dormant in the summer, so plant other perennials in front or nearby to fill in the summertime gaps in the landscape. Oriental poppies will grow in any open, sunny position in a good, deep loamy soil. They are of easiest culture and require very little care. During the dry spells in the early season, they should be watered occasionally, but after they have finished blooming and the leaves begin to die down, they should be let alone for the roots seem to enjoy a thorough baking during the hottest months. Oriental poppies should be mulched in the wintertime. This mulch does not have to be removed in the spring for the leaves soon cover it. After the plants are satisfactorily situated they should be allowed to remain undisturbed for a number of years.
