Dwarf Evergreen

The Mugo Pine is a dwarf evergreen tree. Plant a few as an evergreen boarder along your home, or just one as a specimen plant in a side yard to offset seasonal plantings.

Your Mugo Pine is a popular evergreen and increasingly used for more than just household foundation plantings. It’s often underestimated because it doesn’t have showy flowers or fall color. However, it does have a highly-adaptable nature, and is hardy and carefree while maintaining excellent color and form all year.

In its mountain native habitat, the Mugo Pine can grow up to 20 feet tall. However, your Mugo Pine is a low growing variety, reaching 3 - 5 feet in height but spreading twice as wide. It has a dense growth habit and rounded nature.

The 2-inch needles are dark green, providing a vibrant appearance year-round. In the mountains it often grows in rocky, shallow soil so you don’t have to worry about having particularly rich soil for your little evergreen to flourish. It’s very hardy and won’t give you any trouble or require special care.

Your Mugo Pine adapts well to shearing, so you can feel comfortable pruning it into a tight, compact mound if you prefer or just keep it within particular confines. All in all, the Mugo Pine is an outstanding choice for a small shrub that will be a stable, standard feature in your yard year-round without any special care from you.

Spreading Review by Terry
I love how this dwarf pine covers an area. The needles are a beautiful dark green and has a lovely shape. Since these plants are so dense, I planted three where I wanted to hide an old wooden fence. Grand idea!
Slow growing Review by Eddie
The mugo pine is slow growing but it is carefree. I read where this pine tree can live hundreds of years.
pruning Review by red hawk
The mugo is an easy to grow evergreen plant, but it should not be sheared because it will lose its highland character and natural shape. The mugo can be kept low by pinching in half or cutting back the new candles, which form at the end of the branches in spring. It is an ideal plant for a natural garden, Japenese garden or even a formal garden. Plant it next to a rock and you will have instant landscaping
I think I have one! Review by katsrap
When we moved into our house, 14 years ago, the owner told us the pine ball was a mugo pine. Well, its about 20 feet tall and 15 feet wide and has lived for 25 years without any care from us, except an occasional acid supplement.
