Lilac - President Lincoln, 'Syringa vulgaris 'President Lincoln', is a fast and large growing shrub. It has large heart-shaped leaves, and the flowers are orchid in bud opening to a gorgeous Wedgwood blue. The fragrance is captivating, truly calling attention to the show-stopping display of blossoms. The Lincoln lilac has branches that are erect and open with rich green foliage. This lilac variety likes full to partial sun, and is fast growing to 10 or more feet tall and about 6 feet wide, or you can easily clip to shape. Use as a source of blue flowers in the garden, for cut flowers, or as a tall informal hedge. Try any lilac in the mixed border where taller growing branches can peek up over other lowering growing perennials. President Lincoln Lilac is attractive to bees, butterflies and/or birds. Lilacs can withstand severely cold winters (even -35 degrees C) and in fact, the species does not grow well in areas without significant frost in wintertime.
