Lenten Rose Onyx Odyssey
Lenten Rose Onyx Odyssey, Helleborus Winter Jewels 'Onyx Odyssey', is a dramatic and elegant beauty. 'Onyx Odyssey' is slate purple to near black in color, boasting 15 to 20 petals held in successive layers. Each flower can measure up to 3" across, and the petals retain much of their coloration and remain on the flower; as the petals surround the swelling seed pod, the interest is extended long past the initial bloom time.
The foliage of Helleborus 'Onyx Odyssey' emerges purple in early spring and matures to a lovely shade of green. This evergreen foliage provides year-round interest It often flowers during the Christian season of Lent, from which it gets its common name, Lenten Rose. Helleborus is a hardy, easy to grow perennial that thrives in a partially sunny to full shade location and are great companions to hosta. They are tolerant of heat and humidity.
Helleborus are enjoyable to grow because they are low-maintenance and disease/pest-free. As with many ornamental perennials, adequate soil preparation is the key to long term health and vigor. Helleborus are deep rooted, stout plants, and are well-known for their thick, shiny green foliage. Trim back last year's foliage in the spring.
