Bird food is food, usually a variety of seeds, eaten by birds. Bird lovers generally make or buy bird food to feed to pet birds or use in birdfeeders. Bird food can be natural or commercial, but the choice of what to use as bird food depends on the species of bird being fed. Bird food can be placed in a bird feeder, bird table, or tray feeder and put outdoors to supply bird food to birds. The success of a bird feeder in attracting birds depends upon its placement and the kinds of foods offered, since different species have different preferences of bird food.
The black sunflower seed is a highly recommended seed to put in feeders. These seeds attract a wide variety of birds, have a high ratio of meat to shell, and are high in fat content. Other common birdseeds include niger, or thistle seed, a favorite of goldfinches, millet for sparrows and juncos, and safflower for cardinals, among others. Since not all birds eat seeds, it is recommended that Suet (beef or mutton fat) be used for insect-eating birds like nuthatches and woodpeckers. Of course nectar, which is essentially sugar water, will attract hummingbirds.
