Fountain Grass Spouts Mauve Plumes
Pennisetum 'Desert Plains', Pennisetum alopecuroides 'Desert Plains', is a hardy and graceful, fountain grass that makes a dazzling focal point in a sunny landscape.
It is easy to grow and needs at least 6 hours of direct sun per day. Desert Plains is a seedling of Cassian, but has an improved habit, better flowering performance, and richer fall color.
Desert Plains forms a stunning upright vase-shaped clump. The plants fine textured leaves make a transition from green with deep red tips, to shades of orange and bronze in the fall.
It bursts into bloom with its showy, large 5 inch long, mauve-colored bottlebrush plumes early fall, about 2 weeks later than 'Cassian'.
Once this ornamental grass is established, it takes on the heat, humidity, and punishing sun effortlessly. It tolerates drought, is easy to grow, and is deer resistant.
Carefree hardy plant!
