Blueberry Blues?

If your soil isn't moist, well-drained and somewhat acidic, you may have the blueberry blues, as the plants never set on those tasty berries or in some cases never grow at all. If you have such a situation, you do have options. Add compost or other organic matter to your soil to improve drainage in those clay soils.

It is best to find hybrids that are suited for your region, such as the Northblue, Blueray and Jersey. These blueberries are quite adaptable if you have well drained soils. It is always a good practice to mulch your soil with a heavy layer of organic matter such as shredded leaves or evergreen needles. This helps keep the roots cool and moist and will also improve your soil. If you choose to go the natural way to build a more acidic profile, you can always purchase fertilizers that are formulated for acid loving plants.

It is advisable to have your soil tested before planting if you are unsure of your soil profile.
