Rooftop Gardens

The Europeans sure understand the concept of rooftop gardens and thankfully it is starting to be more accepted and utilized in the United States. If you are not familiar with rooftop gardens, they simply help keep the rooftop cooler as the plants have a cooling effect on the roof. That lessens the load that air conditioners have to work to keep a building cool in the summer or fall. Plus, air quality is improved and rooftop gardens reduce CO2 emissions. Rooftop gardens reduce rain water run off by soaking up the rain. In the winter the garden insulates the roof from the cold temperatures saving on costly heat bills.

Sedum's are the most popular plant used in these plantings but some grasses have caught on such as the native Blue Grama Bouteloua gracilis ' Hachita' grass.
