Helpful Gardening Tips

Planting Annuals

Like most plants, annuals thrive in fertile, well drained soils that contain organic matter. An easy way to add organic matter is by adding composted leaves each year to your soil. In sandy soils the organic matter is important as it helps the soil retain moisture. In clay soils it will help loosen the soil. Treat your soil well and you will be compensated with beautiful flowers each year.

Another key to beautiful annuals is to plant your annuals after your last frost. Don't wait until your temperatures are in the high 80's to plant. Heat causes the young plants to go into survival mode which prevents the plant from growing vigorously. Planting early allows for established plants before the heat of summer sets in.

When feeding your plants, don't use a high-nitrogen fertilizer as you will end up with more greenery than flowers. We recommend using a 20-20-20 or 12-4-8 fertilizer.

Dead-heading (removing spent flowers) is very important to keep your plants blooming profusely. The plant is using its energy into producing blooms rather than seed.
