Seed Starting Indoors

If you are looking to get a jump on the upcoming season varieties such as tomatoes, onions, peppers and perennials really benefit from an indoor start.

A key to success is making sure there is sufficient light for the plants. If you experience tall and skinny seedlings which fall over and die, that is the result of not enough light.  We recommend a  4-tube ballast fluorescent light which is placed 1" - 2" above the seedlings. Your seedlings must receive 14 - 16 hours of light per day. No shortcuts here or you will experience those tall and skinny plants that fall over and die.

It is best to plant the seeds in high quality soil. Please do not use outside soil as the results you achieve will be very poor.

When watering the seedlings keep them moist but not soggy. Please keep in mind if the seedlings dry out even once they will die.

You don't need to invest in new seed starting tray if you don't want to. Old egg cartons or milk containers work well. One the roots start hitting the side of the container and start curling around the container it is time to transplant into a larger container.

You have come this far the plants are ready to be moved outside. Not to fast though. You will need to harden off the seedlings for 7 - 10 days by taking the containers outside and placing them in a shady location away from the winds during the day. Increase the time outdoors gradually.

Happy Seed Starting!
