We are only one month into winter and it's snowing outside, but in my household this is the first day of spring. Why? Because I suddenly feel the urge to plant, organize, repot and get set for the growing season.
Yesterday at the garden center I saw pansy seeds. I can't resist pansies, violas and all their windome kinfolk, so I bought two packages. Last night I planted half of one package and today I'll plant more. What could be more springlike?
The winter-blooming jasmine sprigs that I brought in the other day are in full bloom on the windowsill. The calendar tells me that it's time to pull the hyacinths bulbs out of the refrigerator so that the warmth of the house will inspire them to sprout stalks and eventually perfume the indoor air with their blooms.
I set aside a little time every day to "garden"; potting up rooted cuttings and repotting indoor plants. Any day now I may actually read the directions on my recently-purchased box of extra long tent spikes and go about the business of using them to re-anchor my fallen garden arch.
What could be more springlike than making it possible for my roses to grow high and wide come May?
