What plants attract butterflies?

What could be more enjoyable than standing in a garden with a young child and observing the flight of a colorful butterfly? I had that experience and the joy I witnessed in that child's expression made me want to repeat the experience time and time again. So I set out to create a place to attract the butterflies. Butterflies require little more than some water, a place to rest in the sun, and some favorite plants.

There are many species of butterflies and the one thing they all have in common is their preference for plants that flower. So providing plants that flower through the seasons of spring, summer and fall will create the optimal feeding sites for these harmless and beautiful insects. Annuals such as snapdragons and marigolds, perennials such as Joe Pye weed, phlox, and of course the famous Butterfly Bush are all appealing to butterflies.
