Trees can be injured by the frost, even if they have been in the ground for a couple of seasons.  This is especially true for trees that are less than 5 years old.  We all know that tree wrap is one way to protect young bark from pests like rabbits and deer, but tree wrap is also a good idea when the temperatures start to change.

Often in fall and winter, the sun will come out and the temperature will be half way warm.  However, the temperatures plummet overnight when the sun goes down.  This drastic change in temperature can cause bark to expand and contract at such a rapid rate that it causes the bark to split.  This is where your tree wrap will come in handy.  By wrapping the tree, you will help to prevent these cracks from taking place.
