Common Questions Answered

How many oak tree species are there?

It has been reported that there are over 500 different species of oak trees (Quercus) worldwide. Now, I have read of some arguments that not all of them are unique but some may be hybrids or very closely related. I do not intend to enter that argument, but I do know that the oak species is one of most sought after tree species on our website. There are approximately 55 known oak tree species in the United States.

The most sought after oak trees on our website seem to be White Oak (Quercus Alba), Northern Red Oak (Quercus borealis), and Sawtooth Oak (Quercus acutissima). Oak tress are known for their longevity, shade, leaf shapes, acorns, and strong wood. Oaks seem to be one of the best for withstanding the powers of nature. The Ohio State Research Extension Service has published a informational bulletin that is very informative. http://ohioline.osu.edu/sc195/028.html
