Foliar feeding is a relatively new technique of feeding plants. The fertilizer is applied directly to the leaves. There have been some reports of dramatic fruit and vegetable production increases with the use of foliar fertilizer. In some instances, it is easier to add trace nutrients through the leaves in a much more efficient manner than through the soil.
The use of a sea-based nutrient mix, such as algae, can provide many of the trace nutrients that plants need to perform at their best. Algae also contains hormones that are considered good for cellular development of plant leaves. Foliar feeding is a plus for organic growers because the soil is not amended or changed with a non-organic substance.
There are several manufactures of foliar fertilizers. I just 'Googled' the term and found several. The label on the manufacturers products should list the application times, rates, nutrient content, and other special instructions. As with any other new application of a product, try it on a few plants first and see if there is any visible damage before applying it to all of your garden.
