How do I plant spring bulbs?

Bulbs are some of the easiest plants to grow.  Most bulbs need full sun or at least 6 hours a day.  There are some, like wood hyacinths that require partial shade.  Few bulbs will thrive in heavy, constant shade.  For year to year blooming the site should receive at least 8 hours of full sunlight per day.  Well drained soil is important to reduce rot while the bulbs are dormant.

Some bulbs bloom earlier than others.  There are lots of types to choose from.  Some of the most popular are tulip, narcissus, grape hyacinth, hyacinth and crocus.  Bulbs will look natural when planted in waves or masses and will also show off their colors the best.

Soil should be loosened to at least 4 inches below the suggested planting depth.  Place the bulb in the hole with the pointed end up.  Using the soil you dug up, replace it and firm it around the bulb.  Water thoroughly and then water deeply once a week until the ground freezes.

You will want to remove any faded flowers to prevent seed formation as it will take energy away from the bulbs.  You can deadhead some types of daffodils that will also lengthen the flowering time.  After the leaves have turned yellow, cut and remove the foilage to prevent diseases from affecting next year's blooms.
