The ginkgo tree (Ginkgo biloba) has been around for millions of years. This ancient tree is becoming popular choice for landscapes, but often it is the male trees that are desired. Many people have questions about the drawbacks of this particular tree.
The biggest complaint with these trees is the "fruit" that they bear. Male trees are desired because they still flower, but they don't have the seeds that the females do. The female varieties will produce a seed that is dropped in the fall. This seed that is produced is usually around 1 inch in diameter and is an orange/yellow when it is dropped (almost resembling a small apricot). This seed, or fruit as it is often called, is very soft and can be a little messy during the fall season. The other issues is that they have a strong odor that is off-putting to most people. The other issue with this tree is that many places sell them un-sexed, so you may end up with a tree that possesses the less than desirable characteristics.
You may want to keep this in mind if you are thinking about purchasing a ginkgo tree. They are beautiful to look at and are resistant to many insects and diseases, but the "fruit" is not usually looked upon favorably.
