Tree wrap can be a good addition to your new, young trees. Especially if you are in an area where there are rabbits, squirrels, mice, deer or even woodchucks. They just love to nibble on the tender fresh trees. Unfortunately, that nibbling can cause lots of damage. Therefore, trunk wrap has come into being and can be a deterrent to keep them from damaging and even killing a tree. Depending on the wrap, they can also inhibit insects and disease. They also have the ability to help keep the trunk from being damaged by weed whackers and lawn mowers as well as sunburn and sudden changes in temperature.
There are several different types out there to choose from: Crinkle paper, Vinyl wrap and Mesh tree bark protectors are the most popular.

They are all pretty easy to install and come in different sizes. Basically, they are wrapped around the trunk of the bottom of the tree up to the bottom limb where most of the damage takes place. The wrap should be put on the trees in the Fall season and then removed in the Spring after the snow has melted and the animals have other plants to eat or dig up rather than your tree! The mesh tree bark protectors have enough air circulation you can leave them up longer as long as they aren't impeding the growth of the tree.
Whatever you decide to do, you will feel confident that you have done your best to keep these problems at bay and will give your tree a good start.
