Quick Overview
The Gravenstein Organic Heirloom Apple, Malus domestica 'Gravenstein', is firm, snappy, light green with red stripes and has a wonderful distinctive flavor; an old apple variety with outstanding quality! Gravenstein Apple (Red Gravenstein) is an improved strain of the old favorite cooking apple with darker red stripes. Because of its excellent quality and dense flavor, it is famous for sauces, baking and fresh use. The Gravenstein isn’t a keeper; its short stem often makes it fall, and its moist, crisp flesh bruises easily. Pick the apples frequently because of the uneven ripening; this can be somewhat controlled by heavy pruning. Being a large vigorous tree with dark thick leaves, the Red Gravenstein is a hardy variety and can withstand difficult conditions. Ripens August to early September, and it requires pollination from another variety: Empire, Fuji, Gala, or Red Delicious.
