Grapes are a wonderful, healthful, edible fruit. Grapes are not only tasty but they contain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that have been proven to assist the body in staying healthy. One of the benefits of grapes is they possess a high concentration of antioxidants and resveratrol. Studies have shown that resveratrol prevents and protects against the negative effects of high calorie diets. Grapes (resveratrol) are also known to be anti-inflammatory. So, include them in your regular diet, be it in the form of fresh fruits, juice or in salads. Grapes have a superb taste, firm texture, and are full of health benefits and they can be grown in a home garden.
Early spring is the best time to plant grapevines. During the first year, mulch your vine, and keep free of weeds. Prune off broken or dead portions of branches and roots. At the same time, prune top growth to a single cane. During the first year, the vines are normally tied to a stake to keep them off the ground. If the season of planting is dry, supplemental watering is also necessary to keep the vines growing. It is important to get as much first-year growth as possible.
It usually takes about three years to establish a grape planting. Vines planted for training on a trellis are normally placed 8 feet apart, while those planted for training on an arbor can be placed 4 feet apart. In the second year, before growth begins, a support for the vines, either a trellis or an arbor, should be provided. Grapes require heat so plant your vine where it will get the most sun. Grapes do well in most soils as long as you have good drainage. Wet or heavy clay soils are not good for grapes. An ideal pH level for grapes is 6.5 but they grow well between 6.5 and 7.5.
