Although it has a very short storage life, this apple is great for pies and cooking. Among the most beautiful of apples, it is said to be of Russian origin and is one of the handsomest dessert fruits. The Red Astrachan apple quality is good, but if not taken from the tree as soon as ripe, it is liable to become mealy. Despite the problems of storage, the tree bearing lightly every other year, and some apples falling off the tree, it is still grown by many because it is available early, and they like it for apple sauce. The Red Astrachan tree requires rich soil, moderate watering, good drainage and full sun. It has stout dark shoots, and broad dark green foliage; no apple tree can be more ornamental!
