The Sweetheart Cherry (Prunus avium) is a compact self-fruiting cherry tree that is quickly becoming very popular. It is native to Europe, through Turkey, Northern Africa and into Norway.
There is a long history of cherries in human diet. Petrified seed have been found in prehistoric archaeological sites in Europe!
It has in brilliant white flowers in mid April that will brighten any yard followed by and abundance of large, bright red, crunchy, sweet cherries in mid July which resist cracking. The fruit ripen later than other cherries, extending your cherry season.
In autumn, the bright green shiny foliage turns exciting colors of orange, pink or red!
The stems are purple brown on young trees and becoming dark brownish black and fissured on older trees. It has a strong main stem and conical shape when young, maturing into a rounded shape as an adult. It grows to 20 feet with an equal span.
The tree begins to bear fruit early, as early as 3-5 years!
