Cherry Tree - English Morello
The English Morello, Prunus cerasus, is a native to Europe and Southwest Asia and were known to the Greeks as early as 300 BC. It is related to the sweet cherry but has fruit that is more acidic, making it a sour cherry.
It is a fantastic late-ripening very tart cherry for eating fresh, pies, and cooking. These cherries are often found canned, packed in syrup or dried and in preserves. They also retain their flavor when frozen and can also be used when making liqueurs and brandies.
It is a late blooming self fertile tree which produces prolifically. The clusters of fruit are dark red to nearly black with dark juice and mature in mid summer. The trees should be draped in netting to prevent losses from willdlife, especially birds.
They prefer a rich, well-drained, moist soil, although they demand more nitrogen and water than sweet cherries.
The Morello can be kept at any height and can be used as specimins, hedges, espalier, and small shrubs.
