Blueberry - Blue Haven
The Blueberry 'Blue Haven', Vaccinium corymbosum 'Blue Haven', produces large, light blue berries that are firm with an excellent flavor; fruit set ripens midseason. Blueberries require fairly specific soil and climatic conditions for maximum production and the soil needs to be acidic and sandy with a varying organic content.
Since blueberries have a shallow, fibrous root system, the soil must be well drained and have moisture; dry seasons frequently reduce growth and yields if not watered properly. Mulching 6 to 8 inches thick under bushes will conserve soil moisture.
'Blue Haven' is a handsome cultivar that works well in the culinary or ornamental garden. Set plants in the fall or early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Harvested fruits have a very short shelf-life and if not used within one to seven days should be vacuum-sealed and kept in the freezer.
