Easy Elegance® Varieties

By: Elisabeth Ginsburg

Easy Elegance®, the new line of carefree roses from Bailey Nurseries, are tough, easy to grow plants that are resistant to pests and diseases. Best of all, they are beautiful and versatile. A quick glance at the wide array of roses in the Easy Elegance® line shows that there is something for every gardener and every garden situation.

Do you love the simplicity of single or semi-double roses? Try ‘Great Wall’, a semi-double variety with its warm pink blossoms and cluster of bright golden stamens Little single-flowered ‘Pink Gnome’ grows only twelve inches tall and features charming pink-petaled blooms with winsome white central “eyes”--perfect for containers or the front of the border. The vibrant red ‘Firecracker’ will light up the garden throughout the growing season, as will the aptly named ‘Golden Eye’, which has red-orange petals surrounding its luminous golden center.
What about something a little more romantic? ‘Kiss Me'’, with its lush, four-inch wide pink flowers and abundant growth habit, is deliciously fragrant and looks great in a vase. ‘Macy’s Pride’™, chosen by the department store chain to commemorate its centennial, opens its pale yellow buds to reveal creamy white, many-petaled flowers that acquire a trace of pink as they age. ‘Grandma’s Blessing’, named after Margaret Bailey, the grandmother of the Bailey Nurseries’ family, features old-fashioned blossoms of dusty pink--perfect for romantic bouquets.

Tahitian Moon
Many gardeners love yellow roses, but hate the black spot disease that frequently ails them. Easy Elegance® roses come to the rescue with varieties like ‘Tahitian Moon’, a large flowered shrub that can also be used as a short climber. ‘Centennial’ is shorter and more softly tinted, with a bit of apricot in its color mix; and ‘Yellow Submarine’, an upright grower, is perfect for more formal bedding schemes.

Bi-colored roses provide more of everything, especially color and excitement. One of the best bi-colors is ‘Funny Face’, a semi-double rose with pink and white petals that contrast with golden stamens. ‘Island Dancer’ is a different kind of pink and white bi-colored rose, with richly ruffled petals that are pink on the front and white on the reverse. At about two feet tall, ‘Island Dancer’ can provide a lot of drama in a little space.

For hot-colored garden beds try ‘Hot Wonder’, which lives up to its name, with loads of hot pink petals. Hotter still is ‘Last Tango’, whose ruffled red petals will cause pounding pulses among flower lovers. The many-petaled ‘Orange Impressionist’ and the fiery ‘Sierra Skye’ combine eye-popping hues with classic Hybrid Tea flower forms. ‘Sierra Skye’ keeps things warm all winter with a bold display of bright rose hips.

Hot Wonder

If your garden is small or confined to containers on a deck or rooftop, there is no reason to forsake the charms of roses. In addition to ‘Pink Gnome’, you can grow ‘Little Mischief’, which is red with a bright white central eye. ‘Paint the Town’ will dominate your containers with the combination of big, bright red blooms and a low-growing, mounding habit. The rich, ruby-tinted flowers of ‘Mystic Fairy’ make the plant an excellent floriferous ground cover.

No matter how you combine them, Easy Elegance® roses will bring new life and energy to your garden.
