Delphinium - Summer Blues
Compact and Sturdy
Delphinium Summer Blues, Delphinium grandiflorum 'Summer Blues', is a wonderfully compact plant that is totally unlike the tall, spikey Delphinium cultivars.
'Summer Blues' is blanketed with 1 1/2" sky blue flowers, stands at a height of 10"-12" and forms compact mounds of well-branched foliage in early summer.
'Summer Blues' has better heat tolerance and is earlier blooming than other delphiniums.
'Summer Blues' will flower in the first year from sowing, making it perfect for bedding, borders or containers, and providing a colorful display over a long summer period.
'Summer Blues' Delphiniums grow best in rich, well-drained soil with a basic pH. If your soil is naturally acidic, adding lime will help to provide these conditions.
They are also heavy feeders. The addition of compost or manure to the soil, as well as a granular fertilize, will result in healthier, stronger plants.
Cut back the first flush of blooms quickly to stimulate rebloom.
Though 'Summer Blues' is short-lived, it is worth using as edging, a bedding plant, or in containers combined with pastel colored annuals.
