Cedar - Deodar

The Cedar, Deodar, Cedrus deodara, is a large stately conifer with horizontal spreading branches and a conical shape.  It is pyramidal when young, but becomes wide spreading and flat topped as it gets older!

Deodar is fairly fast growing for the first decade or two, growing as high as 30 feet in its first 10 years.  It is a long-lived and trouble free tree in most areas.

Deodar has dark green evergreen needles, but may have some silvery bloom giving them a blue-green color.  The needles are 1 to 2 inches long, sharp pointed, and occur singly on new growth.  Later on it develops spur shoots that remain on the tree for 3 to 6 years.

It produces male cones 2 to 3 inches long on the lower parts of crown, and the female cones are erect and purplish; occur on upper portions of crown.

Deodar needs neutral to alkaline soil, full sun, and once established, it is drought tolerant.   Most cultivars of deodar will grow into large, handsome specimen trees that need plenty of room.

The branch tips and leaders droop and have a fine texture.  Use Deodar cedars in the back of a large landscape so they can be enjoyed in their entirety!
