Hedge Trees

Hedge trees are used in locations that have much more room to develop and grow than a hedge shrub would need. Hedge trees have a place in windbreaks, screening, and noise abatement. Larger trees will block far more traffic and road noise than a shrub hedge. The 2 main choices are deciduous and evergreen trees when choosing a hedge tree. Deciduous trees provide spring, summer, and early fall screening. Choose deciduous trees for leaf color and for fall colors to create attractive hedges or screens. Evergreen trees such as arborvitae provide year around privacy and screening. Choose evergreen trees for color, preferred height, and density.

Tree height and width is important. Some trees are more upright and others may have a spread of 30 to 40 feet. A tree hedge will need room for a vastly larger root system than a shrub hedge would need. Plan and provide the room required for the individual tree species you choose. When a plant grows outside of the bounds it was intended for, pruning will become a necessity. Hedges can be created with a mixture of trees. The plant distribution could be as follows: Plant taller trees at the back, shorter trees in the middle, and a shrub plant in front for excellent privacy and noise abatement qualities.
